Starting March 15, 2025, all expressways in the Philippines will require cashless toll payments. This means that drivers will need to have Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) stickers on their vehicles to pay for tolls.
The aim of this change is to make toll payments faster and reduce traffic at toll plazas. Currently, 97% of drivers already use RFID, but the remaining 3% who still pay with cash are being encouraged to switch to it for a smoother experience.
For those who don’t have an RFID sticker yet, they will still be allowed to pass through toll plazas but will need to stop at a designated installation point to get one. If they fail to install the RFID, they will face penalties under the “No Valid ETC Device, No Entry” rule.
The new system will help keep RFID lanes clear, making the flow of traffic faster and more efficient. This is because toll booths that accept cash usually have longer lines, which slow down the traffic. By using RFID, there will be fewer delays, and toll payments will be quicker.
Toll operators are fully supporting this policy and are working to make it easier for drivers to get their RFID stickers. There are more installation sites available, and motorists can also reload their accounts using various methods, such as through banks, e-wallets, or at kiosks.
Motorists are encouraged to install their RFID stickers early and ensure that their accounts are topped up. This will help avoid any delays or penalties, ensuring smoother travel on the expressways. This cashless toll system is expected to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and make traveling more convenient for everyone.
