The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is making remarkable strides in enhancing Davao City’s infrastructure through three major projects: the Davao City Bypass Construction Project (DCBCP), the Samal Island-Davao City Connector (SIDC), and the Bucana Bridge. These initiatives are set to greatly improve transportation efficiency and economic opportunities in the region.

The DCBCP, which spans 45.62 kilometers and features a critical 2.3-kilometer twin mountain road tunnel, is currently 53.52% complete. Once finished, it will dramatically reduce travel time between Barangay Sirawan and Barangay J.P. Laurel, from 1 hour and 44 minutes to just 49 minutes. This significant reduction in travel time is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and stimulate economic growth in Davao City.

Simultaneously, the SIDC project is progressing well. Recent reports indicate that 74 of the required bored piles have been completed for the land viaduct, and 48 have been finished on the Davao City side. Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain expressed optimism about the project’s trajectory, aiming for completion by 2028. This bridge will span the Pakiputan Strait and is designed to improve connectivity between Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal. The infrastructure is a part of the government’s “Build, Better, More” program, emphasizing modern engineering to accommodate future growth.

Furthermore, the construction of the Bucana Bridge is steadily advancing, with civil works now over 53.76% complete since its initiation in November 2023. The four-lane bridge, which is part of the coastal road network, features advanced structural components that aim to facilitate smoother traffic flow. This project, also under the DPWH, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, providing an alternate route to alleviate congestion in the urban road network.
Together, these infrastructure projects underscore DPWH’s commitment to developing a modern transportation framework that will boost Davao City’s economic landscape and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
