QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The infamous “Mt. Kamuning” footbridge along EDSA, a structure criticized for its daunting height and inaccessibility, is finally set to be demolished and replaced. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced an allocation of P89.13 million for the project, with construction expected to commence within 2025.
The directive to replace the footbridge came directly from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in June 2025, following his observation of the difficulties commuters, especially senior citizens and persons with disability (PWDs), faced in traversing the steep structure. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the president’s order to prioritize convenience for pedestrians and commuters.
The current footbridge, dubbed “Mt. Kamuning” by netizens due to its height—equivalent to a four- or five-story building—has been the subject of public ridicule since its construction in 2018 by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for P10 million. Despite its original intent to enhance pedestrian safety, it became notorious for its steep incline, being slippery when wet, being dark at night, and being visibly unstable, shaking with passing vehicles. The MMDA had previously defended its design as a “temporary” measure.
The new design will feature a lower, split footbridge equipped with elevators, directly connecting to the GMA-Kamuning EDSA Busway station. The northbound side will land at the Department of Public Works and Highways’ office, while the southbound steps will be in front of Glam Residences, further integrating with the EDSA busway system.
The DOTr has released an invitation to bid for the design and construction of the new footbridge, with a pre-bid conference scheduled for July 18 and bid opening on July 30. The winning contractor will be required to complete the project within 180 days.
This initiative aims to provide a safer and more convenient passage for thousands of commuters in Quezon City, addressing long-standing public concerns and aligning with the government’s commitment to improving public transportation facilities.
