An SUV driver caught on CCTV driving against traffic on the Skyway will never hold a driver’s license again after the Department of Transportation (DOTr) ordered its permanent cancellation.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on August 9 along the Runway Elevated Northbound section of the tollway. Video footage showed the SUV speeding toward oncoming vehicles, forcing motorists to swerve before a Skyway patrol team intercepted the vehicle.

Investigators said the driver had come from the NAIA Expressway and exited at the Doña Soledad Toll Plaza in Bicutan, where he allegedly made an illegal U-turn and entered the opposite lane.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon called the maneuver “extremely dangerous,” stressing that a driver’s license is a privilege tied to strict responsibilities and that such acts will not go unpunished.

“Hindi ho biro ito dahil buhay po ang pinag-uusapan natin dito. We have to make a strong statement here na we will not tolerate this,” he said, adding that these types of drivers put other people’s safety and lives at risk.

Dizon noted that CCTV footage showed the driver neither slowed down nor attempted to stop, even using bright headlights to signal oncoming traffic to give way.

“Kung titingnan natin ‘yang CCTV footage, hindi po nag menor ang taong ito. Hindi siya nag menor at hindi siya huminto. Tapos nag ba-bright headlights pa siya. Parang sinasabi niya sa kasalubong niya: ‘Tumabi kayo.’ Ito siguro hindi na natin pwede palampasin ‘yung mga ganito,” he said.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a show-cause order and scheduled a hearing within the week. Initially, the driver faced a 90-day suspension, but DOTr officials decided on perpetual revocation after reviewing the incident.

Dizon also warned that if such actions result in injury or death, criminal charges and imprisonment could follow.
