The Taal Volcano in Batangas, Philippines, exhibited heightened unrest over the weekend, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recording a significant increase in both seismic activity and surface eruptions.
On Saturday, October 26, 2025, the volcano logged a series of minor eruptions from its main crater. PHIVOLCS specifically reported three minor eruptions on Sunday morning:
- One minor phreatic eruption that occurred at 2:55 a.m.
- Two minor phreatomagmatic eruptions that occurred at 8:13 a.m. and 8:20 a.m.
These eruptions generated plumes that were spewed up to 1,200 to 2,100 meters above the craters. One report indicated that a separate major phreatomagmatic (explosion due to the interaction between magma and water) eruption also occurred, building up an ash column that rose as high as 2.5 kilometers above the main crater, drawing renewed concern from authorities and nearby residents.
In addition to the visible surface activity, the volcano’s internal state showed considerable instability. PHIVOLCS reported a total of 33 volcanic earthquakes within the monitored period. This persistent seismic rumbling points to continued magma and gas movement beneath the Taal Volcano Island, signaling ongoing magmatic unrest.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, reminding the public that entry into the Taal Volcano Island and its Permanent Danger Zone remains strictly prohibited due to the risk of sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, or even hazardous gas emissions.
