The Remaining Phases of LRT-1 Cavite Extension will resume on 2026

The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) is expected to start building the final three stations of the LRT Line 1 Cavite Extension project in 2026, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

According to Transportation Undersecretary Jeremy Regino, the government has secured 80 percent of the right of way for the remaining components of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project.

These remaining components that are being constructed are of the Las Piñas and Zapote Stations which are in the second phase and Bacoor, Cavite which is the final segment of the project.

“It only requires the relocation of utilities and a few lots. Hopefully, the Right Of Way will be finished by the end of next year,” he stated.

According to Regino’s estimation, acquiring the remaining lands would require the entirety of 2024 and 2025; therefore, 2026 would be the earliest possible year for LRMC to begin railway construction.

The complete LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project will extend the current line by over 12 kilometers, bringing its total number of stations to 28 from 20.

By the end of this year’s fourth quarter, Phase 1 of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension is expected to open. These five stations that are under Phase 1 are Redemptorist, MIA, Asia World, Ninoy Aquino and Dr. Santos.

According to LRMC, with the extension, the passengers’ current 1.5-hour travel time between Pasay City and Cavite will just take 30 minutes. The project is anticipated to increase LRT-1 passengers by about 300,000 people every day, reaching 800,000 in the first year of full operation in 2031.

The LRT-1 was originally projected to cost P64.2 billion, but due to construction delays brought on by the pandemic lockdowns, LRMC had to incur additional costs of P4 billion.
