Davao Oriental, Philippines – A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck off the coast of Davao Oriental on Friday morning, October 10 2025, prompting a tsunami warning for the region.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 9:43 a.m. with its epicenter located 62 kilometers southeast of the town of Manay. The quake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
In response to the imminent threat, PHIVOLCS has issued a strong advisory for immediate evacuation. Residents in the coastal areas of the following provinces are urged to move to higher ground or farther inland:
- Davao Oriental
- Dinagat Islands
- Eastern Samar
- Leyte
- Southern Leyte
- Surigao Del Norte
- Surigao Del Sur
The advisory also includes specific instructions for marine interests. Owners of boats currently in harbors, estuaries, or shallow coastal waters in the affected provinces are advised to secure their vessels and move away from the waterfront. Boats already at sea are instructed to remain in deep waters until further notice. Residents in low-lying areas are strongly advised to evacuate to higher ground immediately and stay away from beaches and shorelines until the warning is lifted.
The powerful tremor was felt across Mindanao, causing panic among residents. There are no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, but authorities are currently assessing the situation.
