The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recently completed the construction of a new evacuation center in Pasig City, aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness in the area. This development comes in response to the pressing need for improved infrastructure to accommodate disaster-displaced families.

Pasig City, situated in a region prone to natural disasters, has faced challenges in providing adequate shelter during emergencies. Previous instances have highlighted the shortcomings of existing evacuation centers, necessitating proactive measures to bolster disaster response capabilities.

Constructed over a span of 10 months by the DPWH Metro Manila 1st District Engineering Office, the two-storey evacuation center in Barangay Bambang is fully equipped to accommodate approximately 200 evacuees. The facility includes sleeping quarters, medical facilities, and essential services to cater to the needs of displaced families.

The establishment of the evacuation center was made possible through collaboration between local government officials, including Pasig City Representative Roman Romulo, Mayor Vico Sotto, and the DPWH. Funding and oversight from governmental agencies have ensured the timely completion and functionality of the center.

According to DPWH National Capital Region Director Loreta M. Malaluan in her report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan and DPWH Undersecretary for Regional Operations in Visayas, NCR, and Region 4B Roberto R. Bernardo, the residents of Pasig City can now rely on the new evacuation center as a safe haven during times of crisis. With improved amenities and strategic location, the center aims to minimize the impact of disasters on the community and expedite recovery efforts.

“Scope of works on our evacuation facility project covers not just the civil and finishing works, but also plumbing, and electro-mechanical components so that it is all set for occupancy,” said Director Malaluan. “The project will enable individuals and families to seek emergency refuge, receive essential services, and regain stability during disasters.”

While the inauguration of the evacuation center marks a significant milestone, challenges such as ongoing maintenance and sustainability remain. Efforts are underway to address these concerns and further enhance disaster preparedness initiatives in Pasig City.

Increasing Disaster Preparedness in Pasig

The completion of the new evacuation center in Pasig City represents a crucial step forward in bolstering disaster preparedness and response capabilities. With support from government agencies and the local community, the center stands ready to provide refuge and support to those in need during times of crisis.
