NEGROS ISLAND — The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island underwent a significant explosive eruption at 5:51 AM this morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported. The eruption produced a 4,000-meter-high ash plume drifting southwest, accompanied by pyroclastic density currents descending the southern slopes.
While the initial explosive phase ended at 7:02 AM, PHIVOLCS has maintained Alert Level 3, indicating ongoing magmatic unrest and the potential for further hazardous eruptions. Chief volcanologist Mariton Bornas noted continued slow ash emission and ongoing monitoring.
Under Alert Level 3, PHIVOLCS strongly advises the evacuation of all residents within a 6-kilometer radius of the summit and prohibits aircraft from flying near the volcano. Potential hazards include sudden explosions, lava flow, ashfall, rockfall, lahar, and pyroclastic flows.
Prior to the eruption, Kanlaon recorded 14 volcanic earthquakes and emitted moderate plumes and a significant amount of sulfur dioxide. This event follows previous eruptions in June and December 2024. PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring the situation and urges the public to follow safety guidelines.
