MRT-3 is set for key operational improvements and to extend operating hours following a surprise inspection on Monday, March 17, 2025.
The inspection was led by DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon and Undersecretary for Railways TJ Batan and was conducted during the rush hour, covering several MRT-3 stations including Taft, Ayala, and Shaw Boulevard.
Prompted by the recent MRT-3 escalator malfunction that caused injuries to several commuters, the local railway management and DOTr also issued an apology and promised more frequent maintenance checks.
The inspection aims to identify and address pressing issues affecting passengers’ daily commute, with several passengers consulted during the visit for public feedback on the railway’s current performance.

DOTr’s Request to Extend Operation Hours
One of the most significant concerns raised by DOTr to the MRT management was the need for longer operational hours to accommodate the high volume of commuters. Extending service hours was requested, as well as the increase of trains that will run during peak hours to alleviate overcrowding.
MRT-3’s regular operating hours currently begin with the first train departing from North Avenue Station at 4:36 a.m. on weekdays, 4:37 a.m. on Saturdays, and 4:38 a.m. on Sundays. Meanwhile, the last train from North Avenue departs at 9:30 p.m. daily.
Acknowledging the need for immediate enhancements, DOTr plans to focus on key infrastructure upgrades such as enhancing lighting in dimly lit areas of the station, constructing a covered walkway connecting the train station to other transport terminals such as jeepneys and bus loading zones, and streamlining passenger flow to reduce congestion and wait times.
