The recently completed seawall in Barangay Poblacion, Banton, Romblon, promises to safeguard coastal communities during the treacherous rainy season. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), aims to mitigate the risks associated with storm surges and water overflow, ensuring the safety and well-being of local residents.
The seawall project, spanning 168 lineal meters, represents a significant infrastructural achievement for the region. The DPWH Regional Office IV-B, under the leadership of Director Gerald A. Pacanan, meticulously oversaw the completion of Phase 2 of this coastal infrastructure project. The construction included not only the seawall but also an elevated road, a sidewalk, a precast curb, a gutter, and street lights, providing both practical and aesthetic benefits to the area.

Director Pacanan, in his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, highlighted the multifaceted advantages of the project.
“The successful implementation of this project is a vital measure not only safeguarding the coastal communities but also serving as another functional roadway for residents and motorists during emergencies,” stated Director Pacanan.
The seawall serves a dual purpose: protecting the coastal barangay from potential storm surges and offering a scenic alternate route for motorists.

The DPWH-Romblon District Engineering Office, responsible for the implementation of the seawall project, emphasized its objectives of preventing water overflow and preserving the scenic beauty of the coast. The integration of a bay walk along the seawall is expected to promote recreational activities and boost tourism in Banton, further enhancing the local community’s quality of life.
The infrastructure project was funded under the 2024 DPWH Infrastructure Program, with an allocation of P93.4 million. The investment reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the resilience of coastal areas against natural disasters while simultaneously fostering community development.
