CAMIGUIN ISLAND – The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) announced the temporary closure of the Camiguin Airport runway on Friday morning after heavy rains from Tropical Storm Basyang caused a nearby creek to overflow, flooding the facility.
In an advisory released Friday, CAAP confirmed that Runway 07/25 is currently unusable due to significant water accumulation. The flooding was triggered by the swelling of an adjacent creek as the tropical storm continues to batter the region with heavy downpours.
As a result of the submerged runway, aviation authorities issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM). The closure took effect at 9:52 a.m. on February 6 and is expected to remain in place until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, pending weather improvements and clearing operations.
The closure has immediately impacted local air travel. Cebu Pacific confirmed the cancellation of flights DG6695 and DG6696, affecting approximately 67 passengers.
CAAP and airline representatives have advised affected travelers to coordinate directly with their respective airlines for rebooking options or refund inquiries. Passengers are also urged to monitor official weather updates and prioritize safety amid the inclement weather conditions brought by the storm.
Authorities will continue to monitor the water levels and the condition of the runway to determine if operations can resume earlier or if an extension of the closure is necessary.
