If you are a builder or homeowner who frequently travels through Quezon City, it is time to map out your alternative routes. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the MMDA have announced temporary road closures along North EDSA to make way for the MRT-7 Turnback Girder Launching Activity.
This construction phase involves installing a steel superstructure that will connect the MRT-7 North EDSA turnback track. While these improvements are part of a larger effort to ease Metro Manila traffic, they will affect the flow of vehicles between the Landmark-Trinoma area and the Unified Grand Central Station until May 2026.
Understanding the Closure Schedule
The construction will be implemented in phases to minimize the impact on daily commuters. However, motorists should be prepared for significant adjustments on both sides of the highway.
Northbound (Going to Balintawak)
- Constant Lane Closure: Two lanes will be closed at all times from February 1, 2026, to May 8, 2026.
- Full Road Closure: Expect a total closure from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM, starting February 11 to March 10, 2026.
Southbound (Going to Cubao)
- Constant Lane Closure: Two lanes will be closed at all times from February 22, 2026, to May 18, 2026.
- Full Road Closure: A total closure will occur from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM, starting March 11 to March 23, 2026.
Why the Lane Closures are Necessary
From a technical and safety perspective, these closures are vital for the installation of heavy infrastructure. Safety managers and consultants for the project explain that concrete barriers and tower supports must be positioned to secure the steel box girders.
By closing two lanes, the construction team has the necessary space to install anchor bolts and formworks without endangering passing motorists. These towers act as temporary supports to hold the girders in place until they are fully connected to the track.
Tips for Motorists and Commuters
With traffic buildup expected as early as 5:00 AM daily, planners suggest the following:
- Plan Ahead: Expect travel times, such as the commute from SM North to Fairview, to increase significantly—sometimes by more than 20 minutes.
- Find Alternative Routes: Motorists are encouraged to check the official DOTr or MMDA pages for the best detours.
- Expect Walking Distances: For those using public transport like UV Express, be prepared for longer walks as vehicles may be diverted away from traditional pick-up and drop-off points.
The MRT-7 project is currently around 83% complete and is targeting partial operations by the first half of 2027. Once finished, the 22-kilometer line will span from Quezon City to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, eventually helping to reduce congestion on major roads like Commonwealth Avenue.
