SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp, a leading steel firm company in the Philippines, announced the resumption of the construction of the country’s first steel beams plant. This comes after the steelmaking and steel section rolling production lines were suspended due to the COVID-19 lockdown. The project, located in Lemery, Batangas, aims to make steel products accessible by creating efficient industrial hubs and manufacturing facilities.

“The Lemery Works steel plant is of national significance as it will reduce our reliance on imports for important steel products needed for the government’s ambitious infrastructure program.” said SteelAsia President Benjamin Yao.

Yao further emphasized its importance to the country’s economic growth and independence. He added, “When you export and process our resources abroad, it is creating jobs in another country. With this new plant, we will recycle our steel scrap here and generate local jobs.”

The Lemery plant is expected to start operations by 2023. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to create at least 1,500 direct jobs and thousands more from ancillary industries and businesses. It will have an annual capacity of 1.1 million tons of steel products.

SteeAsia expects the steel plant to cement Batangas as one of the top steel hubs in the country. The company currently has operational plants in numerous locations, including Cebu, Bulacan, Davao, and Misamis Oriental. They also plan on building plants in Tarlac, Compostela Cebu, and the Quezon Province in the future.
